What is HIV Exposure (PEP)?

PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a short-term emergency treatment to prevent HIV infection after possible exposure. It involves taking antiretroviral medications for 28 days and must be started within 72 hours of potential exposure to be effective.

How it Works

PEP stops the HIV virus from multiplying and spreading in your body. It’s most effective when started as soon as possible — ideally within 2 hours, and no later than 72 hours — after unprotected sex, needle-sharing, or potential occupational exposure.
